Dan schulz:For the Record
I’ll try to give you a little insight to both the types of recording I’ve done, and how that affects my approach to the wonderful world of audio. The majority of recordings have been for the educational market through WOW! Entertainment Inc. However, I’ve also worked in the local DFW music scene for over 10 years which has given me experience in a wide array of musical genres, as well as audio for video.
Engineering-Production
To give you a brief history, I graduated from Butler University with a major in music theory/composition, and a minor in telecommunications. (recording arts) Through this degree program I started out as an intern at Aire Born recording group. From there I moved to DFW, and started working primarily in A/V and live sound. Eventually, after working around the country, and surviving many of the disasters associated with the baptism by fire that is live sound, I settled down into January Sound Studio. I’ve maintained a relationship with that studio to date, while also working at Wow! Entertainment, and occasionally other studios in town.
My recording technique is largely informed by traditional practices, and what the overview doesn’t tell is my experience working with other engineers, and producers. In each of those experiences I’ve tried to take away the practical experience of what works best. This in addition to advanced Protools skills, and musical creativity is what I leverage to ensure every session is as successful as it can be. While I fully support the home recordist, hobbyist, and those who simply don’t have the budget for working in a commercial studio, I believe there are great advantages to working in an environment designed for music production. With the right preparation, and the right people, excellent results happen quickly, and are expected.
